Summer is such a wonderful time of the year and it's great if we can spend as much time as possible outdoors. With this August being almost a washout ( Did I hear the wettest on record?) However, just before the end of the month reaches the end It looks as if we may have a change of weather just around the corner. Fingers crossed it would seem summer is due to make an appearance this weekend, just in time for the August Bank Holiday. Yeah to a sunny bank holiday, let's enjoy it and let's get outside, it doesn't normally pan out this way.

Here are our 6 favourite ways to spend the weekend outdoors in a cost-effective way.

Summer Picnic

Summer isn't summer in our eyes without a picnic by the beach, by the water's edge, in the countryside or park. Whatever area you can access to sit outdoors it's great to roll out your favourite blanket and enjoy a sharing picnic with friends and family, in the summer sun. We love to pack our picnic basket with lots of our favourite snacks and drinks.

Take a light afternoon stroll.

Depending on where you live will depend on where you take your afternoon stroll. We live by the sea, so enjoy strolling along the promenade when the heat of the day has subsided.  We love to stop for a refreshing drink watching summers nature, the waves lapping and if you stay long enough you may get to see a beautiful sunset too.

Go, fruit Picking

Take a drive or walk to your nearest fruit and vegetable picking farm and feel the childhood memories flood back, of going to the local farm and filling punnets with fresh strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants or whatever is in the season when you go. You can't get much fresher than that. If you pick enough why not make a home raspberry jam. We ventured to a PYO farm in West Sussex  https://www.roundstonefarm.co.uk/available-crops

Go for a cycle ride.

A family cycle ride in the park, or cycle trail. We live in Brighton and have the cycle schemes so we are able to hire a bike and cycle along the promenade and when we have finished drop the bike off later in the day at one of the bike points. We love to cycle along the seafront with the salty sea breeze in our hair, stopping off at the pier for some fresh doughnuts or have a slow wander through the vibrant lanes.

BBQ & Alfresco Dining

What smell screams a bank holiday than the smell of a BBQ. There is something so special about grilling your food outside, it just tastes a little bit extra special. We love to create platters and serve all our meats and fish on these served with a lovely homemade coleslaw and a large salad.  We love our alfresco dining to last long into the summers evening. So we create a cosy outdoor nook for when the sun goes down and there is a cool sea breeze. We add throws, cushions and rugs into our nook and add some beautiful bamboo lanterns to give a soft evening glow. Add pots of herbs to the table for the summer scent and candlesticks on the table for an extra added glow.

Make your own ice cream.

Refreshing ice cream is perfect to help you cool down on a summers day. We just love to make our own refreshing lemon ice cream. It makes the perfect refreshing summer treat for all the family. We like simplicity and ease when it comes to ice cream and use Nigella Lawsons no-churn ice cream recipe, so simple, yet so satisfyingly tasty.
